Jim van Oss
Jim van Oss retired in 2024 from Moog where he started in 1984. Most recently he was the Aerospace and Defense PLM Architect and Strategist starting the product lifecycle management
(PLM) program, working with additive manufacturing, and Blockchain projects at Space and Defense and Aircraft Groups. Jim was a co-inventor of several blockchain patents related to the provenance of additively manufactured parts and coined the term VeriPart™. Prior to this Jim
was Product Line Engineering Manager Spacecraft Fluid Controls for a little over a year and was Group Vice President and Chief Information Officer for 13 years. Preceding this he was Manager of Engineering Applications for 5 years; and was Section head of Design Engineering for 5 years where he worked on fight hardware for the Space Station and numerous satellite propulsion programs. Additionally, he served as a Design Engineer for 6 years working on fight hardware for the Space Shuttle, numerous satellite propulsion programs, missiles, and aircraft.
Jim earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Jim has taught numerous engineering courses as an undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate at UB at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Jim is a trustee of the Niagara Aerospace Museum and a trustee and founding chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Advisory Board at UB.
The Engineering Alumni Association of the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences awarded the 2018 Engineer of the Year to Jim. He served as Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 5 for 8 years where he was awarded GNFC Scoutmaster of the year in 2010. Jim was a Trustee of the Buffalo Zoological Society for 9 years, a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the School Engineering and Applied Sciences at UB for 3 years, a member of Executive Board of the Greater Niagara Frontier Council (GNFC) of the Boy Scouts of America for 10 years.
Jim was born in Paris France, speaks French fluently, (still) plays ice hockey, and enjoys canoeing, and old home improvement.
