October 17, 1947, Capt. Charles E. Yeager flies the Bell XS-1 through the sound barrier. This achievement is just another example of the genius of the men and women of Western New York and the two Bell Test Pilots, Jack Woolams and Chalmers “Slick” Goodlin, who performed 36 test flights preparing the aircraft for Yeager’s historic flight.
